BOOKS AND STORIES

50 Simple Things Kids Can Do To Save The Earthby The Earthworks Group
I liked this book so much that I gave it everyone at my "Save the Earth" 8th birthday party.  It's full of great ideas and information.  And it's not just for kids, my parents do a lot of things now that they learned about in the book.

An Inconvenient Truth
by Al Gore (who used to be Vice President of the United States)
This book made me sad.  It's a bit scary and very informative.  It's scary because it shows land flooded, pictures of hurricanes, and the polar ice caps melting.  It shows our population and how it's gone up much higher than I ever thought possible.  It's informative because it shows you things about the Earth that you might not have known before.  It shows how glaciers are melting, lakes are drying up, and how the greenhouse gasses and the melting polar ice caps go hand in hand with global warming.  It makes everything seem so much more dangerous and strange and uncalled for.  Mr. Gore said it's a spiralling cycle of destruction and it's sad to me.  I think this book is very important and I think everyone should read it.
(Mr. Gore originally wrote his book for adults, but there's a new version for kids and teenagers.  I like the grown-up version better because it's much more interesting and informative.  There's also a movie that I haven't seen yet.)

Captain Eco and the Fate of the Earth
By Jonathon Porritt and Ellis Nadler
This book is awesome!  It's just like reading a comic book.  It's informative and funny, and it has really good pictures.  It tells you a lot about problems the Earth is having that you may not know about.  Once you read it, you're going to want to read it again and again because it's so good.

How We Know What We Know About Our Changing Climate:  Scientists and Kids Explore Global Warming
By Lynne Cherry and Gary Braasch
This book is nice and educational.  But it has sad pictures of the changes to the Earth - glaciers disappearing and factories polluting the air.  This book tells us that we should help save the Earth because in even less than a century, the Earth could just be a pile of garbage.  It starts with the frogs and the plants, then other creatures, and even we humans can start disappearing.  This book is about how scientists measure the changes in our Earth, and how we can help.

Polar Bears on the Hudson Bay
By Dan Leathers
This book is very informative and sad.  It tells you about the troubles of the polar bears.  Polar bears are dying because of global warming.  Since the ice is melting, they sometimes have to swim more than 200 miles to find solid ice; and they can only swim about 100 miles.  So they're drowning.  It's very sad and it shows us that we have to do something fast!

The Down to Earth Guide to Global Warming
By Laurie David and Cambria Gordon
This book is funny, informative, and has some charts in it that really help you see how the world is doing.  It stresses earth friendly things a lot, like walking and biking; and tells you things you can do make sure the Earth becomes healthy.  There's also a list of jobs in which people help the Earth.  It's pretty interesting to read about different jobs.  If you read this I'm sure you will understand global warming in no time.
