How to Save the Earth
There are so many things we can do in our everyday lives to help save the Earth. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
Start a compost pile
Put in your egg shells, coffee grounds, apple cores and things like that. Just keep it moist and put some worms in, and you'll have compost in no time at all. Look underneath if you're getting impatient and you'll see compost. (I'm still trying to get my parents to let me do this.)
Plant a Tree
The Earth always needs more trees and you can help by planting some right in your front yard or backyard. Every year my parents plant a new tree in our yard or woods.
Fix Drippy Faucets
Even a little leak can waste thousands of gallons of water a year - if it fills a tea cup in 10 minutes then it's leaking 3,000 gallons a year! Look for leaks and get your parents to fix them. If you don't, you could be wasting a lot of water.
Turn Off the Water When You Brush Your Teeth
My brothers did a science fair experiment to see how much more water we use if we keep the water running when we brush our teeth. We were amazed to find out that our family of five would save a whopping 3,364 3/4 gallons of water a year if we would just turn off the water. It's not a very hard thing to do and look at the huge difference it makes. You can figure out how much your family could save and then tell everyone in your family - or better yet, run your own experiment and see for yourselves!
Use Organic Fertilizers
Organic fertilizers don't have chemicals in them like ordinary fertilizers. So if it seeps into the ground, we don't pollute the groundwater like we do when we use regular fertilizers. It took a lot of work to get my Dad to do this, but now he does and our lawn looks great. And it's safer for me and my brothers to play on, too!
Walk, Walk, Walk!
Walk to places that are within walking distance instead of driving. It will help save the Earth a lot. Cars give off nasty fumes that are bad for the ozone layer. Holes are developing in the ozone layer and the chemicals eat at it, so it gets thinner every day. If we walk, we don't give off those fumes. So if we walk we can help save the Earth. My mom and my brothers walk to school instead of driving almost every day, and they know they're saving the Earth.
Hang Bird Feeders and Bird Houses
In the winter birds need a home and food. They are an important part of nature because they carry seeds that will grow into trees and other plants. You can help the Earth by helping birds in your very own community, and you get to see lots of beautiful birds right in your own backyard. Try building a bird house or bird feeder yourself - it's really fun. My family made some out of soda bottles by getting a special kit. So we fed the birds and recycled at the same time!
Try to Invent Things for the Earth
We need more people to think of things to help the Earth. Sometimes kids can see things differently and think in different ways from adults. If you think about it, maybe you can invent something to save the Earth now or when you grow up. Or maybe you can be a scientist who helps the Earth. We can be and do anything we want.
